Taking care of Your Die Cast Models
As with many other collectibles, spending time and effort to care for your die cast model collection is essential, not only to ensure that they are in pristine condition (definitely a pleasing sight to the eye), it is necessary to also insure their resale value if you trading them off in the future.
Die cast models are very easy to care for. There are already many ready-made kits that include waxes, glazes, sprays, applicators and brushes to help keep you collection in pristine condition. When a model is newly purchased, many experts would recommend that a thin layer of wax is applied to the model using either a very soft cloth or Q-Tips to get into tight corners. This application of wax not only helps keep the model glossed, it also helps to repel dust and clean up any hairline scratches that might mar the finishing. However wax cannot be sprayed directly onto the model as excess chemical can dry up and cake in tiny corners that are unreachable.
Normal maintenance of die cast cars involves only cleaning them gently using a light damp cloth to remove dust. Cars that have many decals on them are cleaned using only a dry lint free cloth because water might remove the decals and they can be difficult to reapply.
To clean the interior of the model (do not forcibly open the model if it is an enclosed one), a canister of canned air can be lightly sprayed at a distance of six inches from the model to remove dust. Always make sure to hold the can upright and take care not to spray too close to the model as this can result in damage.
